Vision Impairment
I am a Teacher of the Visually Impaired and am able to support children and young people with a range of visual needs by:
- Working collaboratively with families, carers, schools and therapists to gain a deep understanding of how a young person uses their vision functionally.
- Undertaking functional visual assessments with children in their home or school placement as required.
- Providing advice to support visually impaired pupils access the curriculum including adaption of materials and learning resources, delivery of staff training focussed on visual impairment awareness to enhance staff understanding, working with VI children in a mainstream or special school setting.
I also support VI children who are educated at home and can provide bespoke vision programmes as needed following functional visual assessment.
Many of the young people I support have a diagnosis of Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) which is caused by the brain not being able to process visual information. The impact of this is individual for each young person, and bespoke strategies can be implemented to support them to use the vision they have.
I have a wealth of experience supporting young people with more complex needs in addition to their visual impairment. I am skilled at adapting my approach to gain insight and understanding of how those pupils who cannot access more formalised vision tests use their vision on a daily basis, with the aim of providing bespoke targeted interventions to support their use of vision and develop visual skills further.
