Home based packages
It is not essential for a child to be educated within a school setting. For some children or young people, school or college may not be suitable, and they may need to be educated at home or elsewhere.
What is Elective Home Education (EHE)?
Elective Home Education (EHE) is the term used where parents choose to educate their child at home, rather than sending them to school full-time. Parents take full responsibility for organising and funding this education, even if the child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The local authority must be satisfied that the education is suitable but has no duty to provide or fund it.
What is Education Other Than at School (EOTAS)?
EOTAS is a formal special education package set out in an Education, Health and Care Plan. With EOTAS, the local authority remains responsible for arranging and funding the education. EOTAS can only be agreed if attending school is deemed “inappropriate” for the child. Parents requesting EOTAS are confirming that their child’s needs cannot be met in any school within approximately an hour’s travel from home.
What support does ECMS offer?
ECMS supports families to create bespoke Home Education programmes. We work with families and home-based staff to create planning and learning resources that match a young person’s ECHP outcomes. Support can be provided face-to-face or remotely on a regular basis to ensure that the programme is running smoothly.
